EltaMD UV Clear vs Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen
Two of the most recommended face sunscreens in the United States, graded side by side on their own published numbers. EltaMD UV Clear brings 5% niacinamide and a zinc-plus-octinoxate filter pair at SPF 46. Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen brings SPF 50, four organic filters, a stated third-party seal and a texture built for makeup. Both were read on their official pages on October 11, 2026. One costs about $27 a fluid ounce, the other about $22, and the cheaper one wins more rows than the price suggests.

Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50
Unseen Sunscreen is the most convenient face SPF in this cluster and the one with the most public paperwork behind it. The official page lists Avobenzone 3%, Homosalate 7%, Octisalate 5% and Octocrylene 9% for broad spectrum SPF 50, in a silicone-and-isododecane gel with no water in the formula at all. Supergoop! states the product holds the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation, publishes an SPF efficacy report, offers free returns within 45 days, and labels the product non-acnegenic. Buyers on the brand's own site give it 4.7 out of 5 across 5,748 reviews. This is a documentation review built from the product page, the stated policies, FDA labelling rules and the Skin Cancer Foundation's published criteria, read October 11, 2026. The weak spot is value: $38 for 1.7 fl oz is roughly $22 a fluid ounce, and there are no tone or barrier actives in the bottle to justify it.
Read full review →The short answer
Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50 takes this comparison, by a narrower margin than the price gap implies.
It wins on SPF, on price per ounce, on return terms, on published third-party assurance and on the breadth of skin tones it claims to suit. EltaMD UV Clear wins on formula depth, because 5% niacinamide and sodium hyaluronate are doing a second job inside the same bottle.
- EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 is best for fragrance-reactive, acne-prone or rosacea-prone skin in fair to medium tones that wants a tone active built into the sunscreen step.
- Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50 is best for daily makeup wearers of any skin tone who want an invisible, scentless gel that doubles as a primer and comes with a stated Skin Cancer Foundation seal.
- Our winner: Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50, graded 8.7 out of 10 against 8.3 for UV Clear.
- The honest caveat: both grades come from official product pages, published policies, FDA labelling rules and third-party criteria read on October 11, 2026. Neither product was applied to a face by anyone on this team.

Unseen is easier to wear daily; UV Clear does more in one step
The two products are solving different halves of the same problem, and that is the real decision.
Unseen Sunscreen is an anhydrous silicone gel. Isododecane and three silicone crosspolymers lead the inactive list, with no water in the formula. That is why it behaves like a primer, why the brand tells users to wait 30 seconds before makeup, and why it claims no white cast on any tone.
UV Clear is a water-based lotion. Water and cyclopentasiloxane lead, then niacinamide in third position, with sodium hyaluronate further down. That is a sunscreen carrying a tone-and-hydration step inside it.
If you already own a niacinamide product such as The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, UV Clear's main differentiator is partly duplicated on your shelf.
If ingredient-panel positions are new to you, our note on reading an ingredient list explains why third place matters and thirtieth place usually does not.
Pricing: Unseen is cheaper at every size, and the gap widens on the big bottle
There is no size at which UV Clear is the cheaper product.
From the listed prices on October 11, 2026, our division gives UV Clear about $27.06 an ounce at 1.7 oz and about $21.08 at 3.7 oz. Unseen comes to about $22.35 a fluid ounce at 1.7 fl oz and about $19.20 at 2.5 fl oz.
One caveat we will not bury: EltaMD states net weight in ounces and grams, while Supergoop states fluid ounces. Comparing weight to volume is approximate, and the two are not identical measures.
The American Academy of Dermatology's sunscreen FAQ, read the same day, puts a full-body adult dose near one ounce and advises at least a teaspoon on the face. At six US teaspoons to the fluid ounce, a 1.7 unit bottle is roughly ten face doses.
That makes one correctly-dosed application about $4.60 with UV Clear and about $3.80 with Unseen, at list price. Both look expensive next to Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30 at roughly $0.92 a dose.
Filters: UV Clear is a hybrid, Unseen is fully organic
Neither product is the mineral sunscreen some buyers think they are getting.
UV Clear is marketed around micronized zinc oxide, and zinc oxide 9.0% is genuinely the larger active. But octinoxate 7.5% sits beside it, and octinoxate is an organic filter. A buyer avoiding organic filters entirely would have to rule this product out.
Unseen Sunscreen makes no mineral claim at all. Avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate and octocrylene are all organic, which is exactly why the gel can be invisible on every skin tone.
The FDA's consumer sunscreen page, read October 11, 2026, states that broad spectrum sunscreens help protect against both UVA and UVB and that the SPF value indicates the level of sunburn protection. Both products are labelled broad spectrum.
The US filter list itself moves slowly, which is why a single new approval was news. We covered that in our note on the first new sunscreen filter in 25 years.
Certification: only one of these displays an outside seal
Supergoop states a Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation on the Unseen Sunscreen page. EltaMD displays no third-party seal on the UV Clear page.
That seal is worth something because the criteria are public. The Foundation's page lists, for a daily use seal, a minimum SPF of 30, a minimum critical wavelength of 373 nm for UVA, substantiation of any water-resistance claims, and passing phototoxicity and HRIPT tests.
Both products clear the SPF threshold on paper. Only one tells you it has been through the rest.
We read the Foundation's published criteria and Supergoop's claim to hold the seal. We did not inspect a submission file, and we are not treating a brand statement as independent proof.
The absence of a seal on UV Clear is not evidence of a weaker sunscreen. It is one fewer public check a buyer can make without taking a brand's word for it.
Support and returns: Supergoop's terms are shorter but friendlier
EltaMD gives you more days. Supergoop gives you fewer conditions.
EltaMD's published refund policy accepts returns within 60 days of purchase, but excludes orders where more than 50% of the product has been used, excludes expired and gift-with-purchase items, puts return shipping on the customer, and warns that processing may take up to three weeks.
Supergoop's product page states free returns, with return or exchange within 45 days and final sale items excluded. It also states free shipping over $50 and that all its SPF products are FSA and HSA eligible.
For a product you buy to find out whether your skin tolerates it, a shorter window with free return shipping is worth more than a longer one you pay to use.
UV Clear's compensation is the free shipping threshold on eltamd.com at $75.00, which the $78.00 large tube clears on its own.
What buyers report, and why both numbers come with an asterisk
Both ratings are large, high and hosted by the seller.
On October 11, 2026, eltamd.com displayed 4.6 out of 5 from 3,107 reviews for UV Clear. On the same day supergoop.com displayed 4.7 out of 5 from 5,748 reviews for Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50.
Neither is independent. Brand-hosted review widgets are controlled by the brand, and we did not find an independent verified-buyer dataset for either exact SKU that we could read in full on that date.
There is a second problem specific to Supergoop. The current product is SPF 50, described on the page as lighter than the original Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 and now non-acnegenic. Reviews written about the SPF 40 version describe a different formula.
So read both averages as directional. Volume is not verification.
Layering: which one your makeup will prefer
Unseen Sunscreen is explicitly sold as a primer, and that is a practical advantage rather than a marketing line.
The page tells users to allow 30 seconds before makeup and footnotes a clinical claim about makeup wear quality based on an independent study. The silicone-gel base is the kind of surface a liquid complexion product grips.
UV Clear is positioned as layerable under makeup too, and oil-free helps, but it is a water-based lotion and it is doing skincare work as well.
If your day finishes in e.l.f. Halo Glow Liquid Filter or Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter, the gel is the safer base. Our comparison of those two glow products covers which one to put on top.
If the goal is simply fewer steps, the lazy glam kit is the shorter route.
Choose UV Clear if, choose Unseen if
Four conditions on each side. If more than two apply, that is your answer.
- Choose UV Clear if fragrance makes your skin sting and you want a fragrance-free claim printed on the page.
- Choose UV Clear if you are paying separately for a niacinamide serum and would rather it came inside the sunscreen.
- Choose UV Clear if your skin tone sits in the fair to medium range the brand names, and you want some mineral filter in the mix.
- Choose UV Clear if a 60-day window matters more to you than who pays return postage.
- Choose Unseen if you wear makeup daily and want the SPF step to double as primer.
- Choose Unseen if white cast has ever been the reason you stopped wearing sunscreen.
- Choose Unseen if you want a published third-party seal you can check against public criteria.
- Choose Unseen if price per ounce decides it, or if you can pay with an FSA or HSA.
Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper? Unseen, at every size. About $22.35 a fluid ounce at 1.7 fl oz against about $27.06 an ounce for UV Clear's 1.7 oz tube, by our arithmetic from the listed prices.
Which is better for acne-prone skin? Both claim suitability in different words - non-comedogenic and oil-free for UV Clear, non-acnegenic for Unseen. Neither claim is independently verified.
Which has the higher SPF? Unseen, at 50 against 46. The FDA says higher SPF up to 50 gives greater sunburn protection, so the gap is real but modest.
Is either a mineral sunscreen? No. UV Clear is a hybrid with octinoxate 7.5% alongside zinc oxide; Unseen is fully organic.
Which has the better return policy? Unseen, on terms rather than length: free return or exchange within 45 days versus 60 days at your own postage cost.
Can I just use both? You can alternate, but you only need one at a time, and reapplication matters more than rotation. Use whichever bottle you will actually reach for.
Is this medical advice? No. Glow Grader grades products on published documentation. For a diagnosed skin condition or a prescription routine, ask a dermatologist.
Bottom line
Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50 is the better buy for most people, and the reasons are all on the label rather than in the marketing.
Higher SPF, lower price per ounce, a stated third-party seal with public criteria, friendlier returns, FSA eligibility, and a texture designed for the way people actually wear sunscreen - under makeup, every day. Graded 8.7 out of 10.
EltaMD UV Clear remains the better formula in one narrow sense: 5% niacinamide and sodium hyaluronate make it a two-job product for fragrance-reactive skin in the tone range EltaMD names. Graded 8.3 out of 10.
If neither price sits well, Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30 does the basic job at roughly a quarter the cost per ounce, and the full write-ups for UV Clear and Unseen Sunscreen carry the complete ingredient lists.
